MOTORRAD journalists from all over Europe gathered to spend days on Alpine roads in order to find the best bike for strafing mountain roads. This is what they decided upon (and you want the least amount of points) :

Interesting but it doesn't make we want to rush out and buy any of them.
Of course, living in Perth makes mountain road riding somewhat academic.

Why would they use the lesser street performing version of the 1190 Adventure? The R model was not the variant to use in a test such as this.

That is a stupid decision to use the R over the normal Adventure. But it is what I believe would be the result anyway as the latest BM is still a bit better when you really start to push hard. The KTM motor is officially awesome though!

It's for the fact that I too, live in Perth, that I think I should have a GS.
I will ride on gravel with sport tyres, but they don't give the best feeling. I have ridden with people that will stop if a road turns to gravel, and turn around.
Fact is, many roads have gravel sections, and you can have fun on them at far lower speeds than you need to do to have fun with decent bikes and modern tyres on a sealed road.

It is also fun travelling on dirt roads at rather higher velocities than the powers that be would be happy with, in a sphincter puckering kind of way, luckily I have a dl650 and it does not mind what is under it as long as it has some pace up, it only really struggles in slow rocks and stuff and deep sand/gravel

Indeed. I can point you at any number of roads in the French Alps where the Triumph and the HP4 would be way off up front...

On the other hand, one important fact I've learnt working here: you can get any result you want from a committee, it's just a matter of inviting the right members :D

It's not about sheer speed, it's about overall competence. Comfort, range, handling gravel and frost heaves, two-up - no race rep will win this test IMO. The V-Strom 650 has won it a couple of times.
